Construction Notes: This was only my second or third time playing around with sewing spandex, and my first truly successful attempt. With a lot of guidance and suggestions from my fellow seamstress and friend
Megan Maude, I was able to crank these out in a night! Just in time for Dragon*Con!
I knew the boys were schlepping away getting these costumes ready, so I wanted us girls to have something fun to wear with them. The design of the vintage synchronized swimmers from the "Around the World" music video appealed to me, so I thought these would be something fun, and easily adapted to a steampunk design.
This is a vintage pattern I found after hunting around online. I think it's by Kwik Sew? Unfortunately I didn't hang onto it, so I'm not sure. But it's a basic one piece with low hips and high neck. I used a serger to construct these to allow for plenty of stretch in the seams. All fabrics used are 4-way stretch spandex. Once I got the system down with the first one, the other two went pretty quickly!
Of course, almost NO ONE knew what we were supposed to be, even when we were with the guys. But the funny thing was, because there were three of us and we were obviously a set... NO ONE CARED! So many people wanted our picture! LOL. So, if you're ever worried that people won't recognize your costume... just grab two of your friends and make them wear it too! xD
